Latest research: Positioning & Perspectives

TL;DR

  • The strip matches the rules within 9bp, so the front-end fade lives or dies on core PCE cooling to 2.86% (structural, months).

  • I ride the December-hike read while the 2Y holds below its 4.78% weekly line (structural, months).

  • Duration is a broken equity hedge with SPX-bonds correlation flipped, so my downside stays in options (positioning, days to weeks).

  • Equity and metals downside hedges crowded in the 90s percentiles set up a squeeze if risk merely holds, so neutral is not bearish (positioning, days to weeks).

  • IG at 94bp and HY at 344bp keep the credit-stress watch live under a green index (positioning, days to weeks).

Where We Stand

Yesterday I said the strip and the policy rules sit within 12bp of each other, so from here the data delivers or the trade is done, and that the whole book turns on the 2Y holding its weekly line. Today's close keeps that intact, so not much has changed in the structural read. On the oldest open view, gold grinding lower as crowded downside hedges normalise, the close at 3930.7 keeps it onside even as GLD skew sits at the 92nd percentile, so I stay with it (positioning, days to weeks). The 2Y printed 4.56% into the close, so I am watching the weekly line closely rather than reaching for a new December trade. The copper crowding is not my flag today, but the GLD and SLV downside-hedge crowding is still live, and crowded hedges squeeze if risk merely holds (positioning, days to weeks).
