TL;DR
December hike stays base case while the 2Y holds above the 4.78% invalidation; I ride the front end (structural, months).
The strip only pays if core PCE cools to 2.84%, and it is running hotter, so I keep fading the premium (structural, months).
Duration is a broken equity hedge with SPX-10Y at -0.02; I buy downside in options and leave bonds aside (positioning, days to weeks).
Index downside hedges are crowded near the 97th percentile, so a bounce squeezes the protection buyers themselves (positioning, days to weeks).
Gold grinds to fresh lows with downside crowded; the view holds while it fails to reclaim higher ground (positioning, days to weeks).
Where We Stand
Yesterday I said the December hike stays base case and I ride the front end while the 2Y holds above 4.65%, and today's close challenges the level without killing the thesis. The 2Y settled at 4.61%, below my 4.65% ride line but well above the 4.78% invalidation on the oldest live front-end thesis, so I am NOT changing my read. The strip prices too many hikes thesis opened two days ago stays INTACT at 4.61%, and I keep fading the premium while the data softens. My gold flag from yesterday is still live: downside hedges stay crowded at the 93rd percentile and the view holds while it fails to reclaim higher ground (positioning, days to weeks). What I do is simple, I hold the fade on the strip and I do not chase the equity flush lower, because the confluence does not back a defensive turn yet (structural, months).
What Changed

01 · Rate Risk
EVERYTHING STARTS HERE · HOW MUCH RATE RISK IS IN THE SYSTEM, AND WHICH WAY IT LEANS
Rate vol rose on the day, with MOVE up 6.7pts, but it sits mid-range in its own band and fell on the week, so the jump is noise rather than a regime. TLT flow leans to calls with yields lower, yet the directional skew is flat at the 43rd percentile. The three do not line up, so there is no edge from rates today.

02 · Credit Or Duration
BUILDS ON THE RATE REGIME · WHAT MOVED TODAY, CREDIT RISK OR DURATION RISK
Today was a CREDIT day, and the week reads CREDIT too. The move in the S&P was not a duration event, it was risk premium repricing as tech earnings cracked sentiment, and that matters because the usual hedge is broken.
SPX, the 10Y and the dollar are no longer moving together. The stock-bond link flipped to no stable relationship and the SPX-10Y correlation collapsed from -0.56 to -0.02, which is the day's real story. When that link breaks, duration stops hedging equities, and I will not lean on bonds to cushion an equity flush. The only stable thread left is the dollar tracking rate differentials.
Leadership tells the whole tale. Technology alone dragged 1.56pp off the index while energy and staples added back, so this was a concentrated AI unwind rather than broad selling. Credit is neutral, IG OAS at 89bp sits mid-band, though HY at the wide end is where the low-quality end cracks first.

Attribution
The S&P 500 closed -1.82% on 30-Oct-2026 and the largest driver was the idiosyncratic remainder at -0.99pp; over the five sessions to that close the index summed to -0.55% with the idiosyncratic remainder the largest driver at -1.12pp.

Sector Attribution
Session 2026-10-30. Sectors plus the unexplained remainder sum to the index move, and the sector split accounts for 98% of it.

03 · Covariance
ONCE YOU KNOW WHAT MOVED · CHECK WHETHER THE MAIN ASSETS MOVE TOGETHER

Stock-Bond Correlation
S&P 500 vs TLT, daily returns: 30-day -0.06, 90-day 0.21, near zero, so the hedge is unreliable in either direction.

04 · Priced Vs Delivered
WITH THE BACKDROP SET · START FROM WHERE POLICY IS PRICED, AND WHETHER THE DATA DELIVERS IT
The strip prices 4.46% twelve months out, +58bp over an EFFR of 3.88%, against policy rules that justify 4.58%. That leaves the market 12bp BELOW what the data says, so pricing now matches the rules, and the strip is only right if core PCE cools to 2.84% from the 3.12% it is running. That gap is the tension, because the data is not delivering that disinflation yet.
The meeting the market cannot make its mind up on is March 2027, nearest a coin flip. The terminal repriced 10.5bp lower on the week, softening the hike path. What changes my mind is the 2Y: a weekly close back above 4.78% revives the full hawkish case, a sustained break lower tells me the front end is pricing a growth scare I have to respect.

05 · Who's On The Other Side
POSITIONING IS THE PRICE PAID FOR EXPOSURE TO THE REGIME · SKEW FIRST, COT LAST
Downside hedges are crowded across the index complex, with SPY skew at the 97th percentile and tech skew at the 98th. People are paying up for protection they already own, which means a bounce squeezes the hedgers themselves. Gold and silver downside is bid at the 93rd and 99th percentiles, so the metals flush has the crowd leaning one way. The one place upside is being chased is HY, skew at the 11th percentile, and that is where the squeeze sits if credit turns. This is a positioning stretch, and I keep it separate from any macro turn.

Vol Screen · Rich and Cheap Implied Vol

Positive IV-RV = options priced rich to what the tape is delivering (USO and UNG richest today); negative = vol going cheap (GOOGL and GOOG). Percentiles are each name's own archive history.
06 · What Didn't React
READING THE NEWS IS NOT AN EDGE · THE REACTION IS

TREASURY CURVE STEEPENS ON FLIGHT-TO-QUALITY BID, FRONT END LEADS LOWER
The data was a growth-is-fine, inflation-is-sticky mix: the Employment Cost Index came in at 0.8% as expected while Chicago PMI missed at 55.3, and core PCE held at 0.3% monthly. None of it argues for the disinflation the strip needs. The tell is what did NOT react: Fed speak leaned openly hawkish with Logan calling for two more hikes, yet the 2Y fell 6bp. The front end is being driven by the flight to quality out of equities even as the Fed's words lean hawkish, which tells me this bid is a risk-off reflex and does not reprice policy.

07 · Catalysts
EVENTS ARE TESTS OF THE REGIME · RANK THEM BY WHAT IS NOT YET PRICED
Monday, ISM Manufacturing PMI (cons 54.6): a soft print feeds the growth-scare read in the front end, a firm one backs my strip fade; I would lean on the 2Y reaction over the headline.
Monday, Fed Goolsbee speech: watch for whether the hawkish chorus holds.
Tuesday, Midterm Elections: betting markets price a Democratic sweep near 70%, a known risk I would not pre-position for.
Tuesday, JOLTs and Factory Orders: a JOLTs beat with claims already firm keeps the hike path alive and I add to the fade of the strip.
Wednesday, ADP (cons 65): a weak print ahead of NFP would be the first real crack in the growth story; until then it does not change my read.

09 · Where It All Dies
EVERY VIEW HAS ONE PLACE IT DIES
Every view here dies in the same place: the 2Y weekly close against 4.78%. If we close above it the front-end fade is wrong and the full hawkish strip comes back, if we break and hold lower the growth scare is real and I stop fading hikes and respect the flight to quality.
